Overview

IACS is based in Kolkata, India. This institute came into existence in the year 1876 by a private medical practitioner, Mahendra Lal Sarkar, and this institute focuses on fundamental research in basic sciences. IACS, Kolkata is India’s one of the first and oldest research institute. ICAS is affiliated with the University Grants Commission. In 2018, the Ministry of Human Resource Development declared to grant this university the status of Deemed University and the campus was well-built in an area of more than 9.5 acres.

The motto of the university is to develop science and reach all the departments within this field. The primary objective is to use technology in the right way to lead a comfortable life. The vision of the university is to allow the country to register itself across the world amongst the leading countries when knowledge is concerned. Also, the objective is to attract international status and pursue science at the best level globally and compete with developed countries. The mission of the university is to find, equip, and properly maintain the laboratories and libraries for public use, student associations, and teachers. It also has a mission to create and maintain huge colleges with libraries that has books on the history of nature, mechanics, scientific researches, and philosophical inventions. Also, the mission is to take proper care and find adequate measures to diffuse and cultivate science across all the departments.

Academic Performance

The courses offered by IACS, Kolkata are Integrated B.Sc. – M.Sc. in Program in Science, Integrated M.Sc. – Ph.D. Program in Science and Ph.D. Programme. Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science offers a monthly stipend to the university students who enter the fourth semester in any integrated course of Bachelor of Science – Master of Science programmes and as for students who are pursuing Master of Science – Ph.D. programmes, whoever meets the obligatory CGPA criteria are eligible to receive a stipend ofRs. 12,000 per month for the initial two years. The students that complete their Master’s degree are awarded by the university, the Junior Research Fellowship but that too includes an obligatory criterion mentioned by the institution.

Placements

Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science has a placement cell which conducts and regulates campus interviews. Not only this, the cell provides internship options. The university students are able to get great job opportunities in the respective fields of their choice after the completion of their respective integrated degrees. Since the history of the college is so rich and cultured, this acts as a catalyst in the process of placement, and students are able to receive and develop the best of skills and experience in the curriculum itself.

Notable Alumni

This university is the institution where the great C.V. Raman did his exceptional monumental work on physical optics which later got him the Nobel Prize in Science. Similarly, this is the same place where other great scientists have graduated from. Some of these scientists are K.S. Krishnan, N. K. Sethi, S. Bhagavantam, M. N. Shah, etc.
